SIR LAWRENCE ALMA TADEMA — A Dedication to Bacchus, 1889.

Sir Lawrence is one of the most highly renowned romantic artists of late 19th century Britain. He is famous for bringing everyday scenes from ancient history to life in his paintings. His themes included contemporary portraits, landscapes, Egyptian and Roman historical scenes, with decant images of domestic life. Sir Lawrence was said to be a perfectionist and worked on the smallest details of his paintings with great attention to detail and research to make them realistic. In fact, his super-realistic depiction of marble led him to be called the 'marbellous painter.’

Now, his paintings serve as a reference of past history; the interiors, clothing and ancient style. His work shows the fine execution along with the brilliant colours that charm us with sentiment and playfulness.

He was admired during his lifetime -and even more after his death- for his painting style and depictions of Classical antiquity.
